To create the main accompaniment part, I de-tuned my fretless bass to set up an F# drone, then added other two-note combinations, power chords and 6ths, to create three-note chords. Add drums to that and you have a pretty complete accompaniment. This frees up the cello and guitar synth to do all kinds of things, like the countermelody that rises up between the first two verses.
On a road in southern Ecuador
is a man with seven shoes
and he wants to sell them one by one
in a field in Ethiopia
is a farmer with a plow
and the carcass of an animal
and he wants to run a thousand miles away
and he starts to go, but stops along the way
and he wonders, what have I been doing wrong?
and he wonders, where on earth do I belong?
on an island in the Philippines
that they used to test the bomb
in a prison in the Netherlands
in a cave in Vietnam
in a purple house in Florida
and he wants to run a thousand miles away
and he starts to go, but stops along the way
and he wonders, what have I been doing wrong?
and he wonders, where on earth do I belong?
